  1. In 1981 NASA launched the first Space
  2. Shuttle, reputed to be the worlds first
  3. reusable spacecraft. The Shuttle leaves the
  4. earth upwright from a launchpad. Attached to
  5. it`s underside is one large fuel tank and
  6. two solid fuel booster rockets. The booster
  7. rockets give the shuttle the extra power it
  8. needs to reach the speed to allow it to
  9. overcome the earths gravity. Within a few
  10. miniutes the booster rockets are jetisoned
  11. and return to earth by PARASHUTE to be
  12. recovered and refurbished for a future
  13. flight. The large fuel tank is jetisoned
  14. after 8 minutes into flight, the shuttle then
  15. takes up ORBIT above the EARTH. The shuttle
  16. is a maned SPACECRAFT which means it is able
  17. to retrieve and carry out repairs on
  18. satellites as well as launching them.

  20. On the 28th January 1986 the space shuttle
  21. Challenger had a terrible accident when just
  22. after take off it exploded killing its
  23. 7 crew members. It took NASA two years to
  24. launch another shuttle but has since resumed
  25. normal operation. Probably one of the
  26. shuttles most famous payloads was the
  27. SPACE_TELESCOPE which had to be repaired by a
  28. future mission.
